Third Annual Minds in Motion KW Walking Classic

The third annual Minds in Motion KW Walking Classic was held on Sunday, September 26, 2010.

Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health Inc. is a key sponsor of this unique event - Canada’s first WALKERS ONLY competitive event, featuring a 5 km and 10 km walk, and, new this year, a half-marathon (21 km) distance.

The walk supports individuals who are facing mental health challenges and who are interested in becoming physically active.

In 2009, proceeds from the walk funded 107 pairs of athletic shoes.  This footwear was distributed to individuals receiving local mental health services who have chosen fitness as a means to help recover from
mental health issues.

The connection between physical and mental health has been well-documented.  Health benefits include weight loss, as well as lowering cholesterol and the risk of diabetes.  For people with mental health issues, walking goes far beyond physical rewards.  Getting out of the house and socializing reduces isolation and provides a sense of accomplishment.

The fund-raising goal is an established fund that will allow those who are on limited incomes, due to mental health challenges, to be fitted with quality athletic footwear.

For more information about next years event or how to participate, volunteer or sponsor a walker, please go to the KW Walking Classic website -  www.kwwalkingclassic.com .  Registration is limited to 1,000 participants so register early!

Annual Community Meeting and Recognition Awards

AGM 2010On Tuesday, June 22, WRHMH held its annual community meeting and recognition awards event.  More than 225 enjoyed a delicious meal at Golf’s Steak House and Seafood Restaurant, and the chance to mingle with old and new friends.

The evening’s program included a message from the Executive Director, Wendy Czarny, remarks from president Gord Beckenhauer, and the introduction of this year’s Board of Directors.  Elected officials Elizabeth Witmer, Harold Albrecht and Stephen Woodworth also spoke briefly, congratulating the attendees and the organization for the work done by WRHMH for the community.

As well, staff, board members and volunteers were recognized for their milestone years of service to the organization.

A special gift to appreciation was given to Manulife Financial for their on-going support of WRHMH through the donation of Christmas and Easter hampers to more than 150 consumers.  Pictured above are WRHMH President Gord Beckenhauer, and representing Manulife Financial Groups Benefits Solutions – Tanya Wright and Mark Aikin.

The evening’s entertainment, both poignant and hilariously funny, was ‘Permission to Laugh’, presented by Spark of Brilliance, Stand Up for Mental Health Comics.  Equally funny was Master of Ceremonies, Al Strong.
